ConnectEd

ConnectEd is a program dedicated to bridging the digital divide amongst the senior population by developing a curriculum that offers seniors an effective and hands-on approach to learning the basic functions of phones, computers, and internet navigation. We aim to cultivate a community where seniors can embrace the digital world, enhancing their quality of life and connectivity with loved ones.

The Issue

The digital landscape for seniors is evolving rapidly. While older adults exhibit a range of digital skills, the digital divide persists due to disparities in access and digital literacy. This gap became even more evident during the shift to remote services during the 2020 pandemic, highlighting the digital challenges faced by many older adults. According to Pew Research Center, only 18% of older adults would feel comfortable learning to use a new device on their own, and 77% express the need for assistance with technology. As tech literacy becomes crucial for daily life, bridging this divide is essential for ensuring equitable access to digital resources and services.

How Does ConnectEd Help?

01) Hands-On Curriculum

We developed 4 week, step-by-step curriculum, offering guidance on using digital devices, navigating the internet, and utilizing online services. The 4-week curriculum consists of:

  • Communication Basics

  • Phone Apps

  • Protecting Yourselves Against Financial Scams

  • Popular Internet Websites

02) Hosting Workshops

We host weekly workshops at local senior homes designed to provide personalized one-on-one guidance for seniors. Each workshop typically lasts between 1-2 hours, depending on the topic and participants' needs.

03) Fundraising Events

Potentially donating iPads, smartphones, and laptops for underprivileged seniors in order to increase access to technology. We also look to donate device accessories, such as reading lamps, computer mice, keyboards, phone cases, and more.

04) Expanding Services Online

We hope to increase access to our services by also providing an option to join an online workshop, where student volunteers are able to help seniors individually and from the comfort of their home.
